konnoh Hachimangu Shrine
konnoh Hachimangu Shrine
Tokyo area
This Hachimangu Shrine was enshrined on the 15th day of the first month in the year 6 of the Kanji era (1092) by Yoshiie Minamoto and Motoie Kawasaki.
After Shigeie Kawasaki took over the leadership of the Kawasaki clan, Emperor Horikawa awarded the name of Shibuya for the merit in dismissing intruders at the imperial palace. The Shibuya clan established its main residence castle around the Hachimangu and worshipped the shrine as its family guardian. The establishment is considered to be the birth of Shibuya, and a fortress stone of old Shibuya castle has been preserved on the grounds of the shrine.
After been named as the “Hachimangu” or “Shibuya-Hachimangu”, the Hachimangu later changed its name to “Konnoh-Hachimangu”, and in the shrine precinct we also have a historical cherry tree named Konnoh-zakura, designated as a natural monument by Shibuya Ward of Tokyo, commemorating the fame of the samurai named Tsunemitsu Shibuya called Konnohmaru who joined the military force lead by Minamotono-Yoshitomo, and established his fame in the Hogen Rebellion (1156).
The current shrine structure was built in the year 17 of the Keicho era (1612) by Aoyama Tadatoshi (Elder in the shogunate government and guardian of Takechiyo who installed the third Shogun of Tokugawa) and Lady Kasuga (a wet nurse for Takechiyo) for the gratitude of the fulfillment of the wish that Takechiyo had been installed to the third Shogun of Tokugawa. The Shrine was designated as a tangible cultural property by Shibuya Ward of Tokyo.
Please enjoy the historical place and feel the classic shrine culture of Shibuya.
