Enshrined Deity:Master Yoshida Shoin
He attempted to learn about the situation in the West via the Black Ships, but failed, and was imprisoned. After his release from prison, he taught at Shokasonjuku. he guided young, gifted students who later played a central role in the Meiji Restoration, However, in 1859, Master Shoin was implicated during the Ansei Purge (a great repression against those who criticized the government) and was beheaded on the execution ground .
In 1863, four years after Master Shoin’s death, thanks to the efforts of his students, his remains were moved from Kozukahara to Wakabayashi, Setagaya, which had been owned by the Mori family of Choshu. In November of 1882, as Japan was rapidly advancing toward modernization, his students built a shrine to honor his legacy and to serve as a place of repose for his devoted spirit.
